Sponsor Kal for Jason

I’m raising funds in memory of my friend Jason, who died while kayaking in the north of Scotland this year.

Jason’s family were invited by the Fort William Police to Arisaig, the area where he went missing. They were able to see first hand the scale of the operation undertaken by the many volunteers of the mountain, land, sea and air search teams.

Their professionalism and selfless service to society helps to save lives and bring closure to families of loved ones lost.

I had known Jason since high school, a mere 27 years. He was a close friend and brother.

In recognition of their dedication in the search for Jason, I’m raising funds for the charities involved through running the Spotlight 10K Challenge in London on September 2nd.

The charities are:

  1. Royal National Lifeboat Institution
  2. SARDA Scotland
  3. Lochaber Mountain Rescue Association
  4. Isle of Skye Mountain Rescue

EULOGY TO JASON

I was asked to delivery a eulogy at Jason’s funeral. It is shared here to give you a glimpse of the kind of person and friend he was to me.

Dear Jason,

I remember the first time we met – in the deputy principal’s office at Bellahouston Academy. It was 1988, the first day of term and our first year at the school. Along with some other kids, we had failed to hear our names being called at the assembly and were left behind not knowing where to go.

You befriended me that day, and we remained friends ever since. Over the years, you became like an older brother to me – someone equally wise as he was popular.

I will never forget the times you helped me through the many challenges in my life, like rebuilding a broken heart and the passing of my father.

You were always there for others, eager to help, even if only to listen. You knew how to bring out the best in people with your charm, wit, and by just being you.

I will always cherish our time as friends, the laughs, the silliness, and also the seriousness – the moments of reflecting upon the past and the possibilities of the future, while looking out the window of a coffee shop on Buchanan Street.

You will be missed by everyone at our regular lunches, and cinema outings to watch the latest blockbusters.

I for one will certainly miss your company when jogging in Bellahouston Park, and my inbox will certainly not be the same without your amusing emails, hilarious YouTube links and laugh-out-loud brotherly insults.

But, above all else, I will miss – you.

Thanks for being there, for being a good friend when I needed one the most.

I will see you on the other side.

Until then, rest in peace, my brother.

With love,

Kal
